I grew up in Hindman, a tiny town in Knott County, located in the Appalachia Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. I graduated from Knott County Central in 1994 and from Morehead State University in December of 1998. I was hired the very next week as a special education teacher at Rowan County Middle School. I’ve been a special education teacher in the Rowan County School District for twenty-six years, where I have taught all grade levels from kindergarten to twelfth grade. My husband, Jason Slone, and I have been married for twenty-four years. We have two children, Jayden Slone and William Slone. Jayden is the Events Coordinator for the Rowan County Arts Center in Morehead, Ky. Will is a senior at Rowan County Senior High School, where I also teach. We have two dogs, Raleigh, a hundred pound chocolate lab, and Dixie Mae, a six pound yorkie. We also just lost our cat of eighteen years, Otis. Outside of teaching, I am an artist. I sometimes teach painting classes in town, and I also sell prints to raise money for various causes. I’m also a writer. I hope to someday publish a book of my own poetry or my advocacy story. Art is my first passion, outside of teaching, but traveling is my second love. My husband often jokes that if I owned my own jet, I’d never be home for more than a day or two. He isn’t wrong, but first….my students and my career!
